Malagousia was the variety that began the story of modern Greek wine. We are now used to the idea of indigenous Greek varieties being rediscovered in some remote corner of the country amidst a blaze of excitement. But the pattern was set with Malagousia by Evangelos Gerovassiliou, who recognised the potential of this then obscure grape and set about making a wine that would push its potential to the limit. As Konstantinos Lazarakis MW has written, "The results were stunning. The wine had the power of a Chardonnay, the extract of a great Semillon, a great affinity with oak and a unique aromatic character." Today, Malagousia is firmly established as one of Greece's finest grape varieties.
